Robotic cats are being used across Lancashire County Council’s day centres and care homes to support older people, including those living with dementia.
The pets, which purr, meow and respond to being stroked, help people relax and spark conversation. Staff at the county’s day centres have found them a simple, practical way to ease anxiety and create connection for people who use the service.
Cllr Tom Pickup, Burnley’s county councillor and Lancashire’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: “Robotic pets are having a significant impact on people who attend the County Council’s day centres and live in our care homes. They are helping to improve wellbeing, create meaningful connections for people and bring moments of joy.”
It is a small, low-cost idea with a real human benefit, and a good example of adult social care focusing on what actually helps people day to day.
